How To Get TABS in Education Theme

Now on my 5th day of tweaking the Education Theme, this has been a very frustrating ride – I hope you can help. (And hey… not a complete novice here – I have 57 websites, most of which are WordPress but with different themes on them. This is only my second Genesis theme).

The website I’m setting up is http://LessonsFromMyGrandson.com I’ve read TONS of articles found on Google, watched 23 videoes already, and still I can’t get my version to look like the Education Theme example found here: http://demo.studiopress.com/education/

I've also had some help from this forum - can you help?

Here’s what I need help with and hope you have some suggestions:

1) I REALLY like the blue tabs in the displayed version of the Education Theme – but no matter what I do, I can’t seem to figure out how to get them. The links on the menu line are boring, and the tabs were one of the reasons I got THIS theme. How is this created (since simply creating my Primary Menu doesn’t do it)?

2) No matter what I do, I can’t switch the menu line into the Secondary position either. I have TWO custom menus created, have the widget for custom menu in the Right Header area with the proper menu listed. NADA. Nothing works.

If I can’t get the tabs, I’ll go for the menu in the header… but so far I can’t get it to work. (Really – I KNOW how it’s supposed to work – I have it there on my other Genesis website).

Any suggestions?

Hi Charlie,
Yeah, the themes do come with very basic instructions in the download area, but IMO it's usually a bit light and perfunctory.
I need to check what you mean by tabs... what I think of as tabs are the jQuery tabs. I'm thinking you're referring to the colored menu items in the upper right of the demo, correct?

If so, I think I can help you there. To get menu items in the upper right, go to your Header Right widget area, put a Custom Menu widget in there, select the menu you want, and Save. If that's looking good, then all you have to do is go to Appearance... Menus, and un-select what you had chosen for Primary or Secondary navigation (under Theme Locations), so you don't have a redundant menu in one of those spots.

If that's not it, you may want to contact official support.

Sorry for the confusion and thanks so much for replying... YES, the blue MENU tabs that show in the Education Theme in the upper right. How the heck do I get them?

I've done what you suggested (and what I expected to work), and it doesn't. I have turned on the Secondary Menu location in another Genesis installation and it worked well, so this has be baffled.

HOW do I contact Official Support to ask them about this?

Charlie,
I thought that maybe you had tried that, as you've made many sites, but I thought I'd at least rule that out. Although the themes can differ with their fancy home page set-ups that every design seems to have these days, many of them will work that way, sticking a menu in the Header Right area. It's kind of an argument for a more thorough README file, I'm afraid.

It could be something like your header image placement, but one would need to be hands-on, or at least see the theme after you'd added the menu to that widget, to check it out.

and be sure you're logged in. Then on the right you should see a menu, click Get Help, and then open up a support ticket.

I know this was from a couple of weeks ago, but I am having trouble with my header menu tabs as well.  I can get them into the header, but when I do part of my header text is blocked (not by the tabs).   Any suggestions?

REALLY sorry that I can't help you... I NEVER got the menu tabs to work on my http://LessonsFromMyGrandson.com website. The site looks "OK," just not the way I really wanted it to look!

Thanks Charlie, I am hoping someone can help.  Getting the Tabs into the Header was easy for me.  I just followed the Education theme instructions from http://my.studiopress.com/setup/education-theme/.

My problem is that my page is titled "Jeanne Noorman" and when I have the tabs in the header, the last part of my name disappears.  My site is http://jeannenoorman.com/.  I've left the tabs in the header now, so anyone helping can see it, but I can't leave the site like that long term.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Ahhhh, see what you mean. I guess there are several things you can do to work around that:

• Use fewer tabs in the header-right area. Did you try to have fewer tabs? First it's important to find out if the TABS are covering your name or if the area for where your name is is smaller than what you have in there. (I won't even begin to figure out how to reduce the size of the font in your header - I assume that you're not using a jpg for that area, right? It's supplying the text from your site name? So... turn OFF the widget in the header right and see if your full name appears. If it DOES then it's the tabs causing it. If NOT... then the area for your name is smaller than you need.
• I use a header graphic - but since that causes other problems not solved by this Child Theme, I won't go into all of that right now.
• IF you find limiting the number of (header-right) tabs can work, you can always use the header-right tabs for one thing and the regular menu for others. Right now you have BOTH showing the same things, but you can show different things in different locations by having more than one named menu.

I think I see what you're getting at. 🙂

You just need a wider title area, and a narrower widget area. Here are a couple of CSS bits that should hook you up.

#title-area {
  width: 465px;
}
#header .widget-area {
  width: 670px;
}

They may need tweaking at responsive sizes, but that would require hands-on.

Do people think that "normal mortals" really want to get into code editing?

Seriously - I have 57 websites with most of their being WordPress (others are landing pages) and I have never had to worry so much about coding before.

Dragging and modifying widgets, yes. Changing code: no.

Thanks for getting back to me. And frustrated I am.

But here's my biggest frustration: Time. Learning Curve. Starting over.

What I now have at http://LessonsFromMyGrandson.com  and  http://DrMarcAndCharlie.com work. Not as advertised, perhaps, but they work. And though I have other sites to set up for us and our clients, do I really want to learn the ins and outs of even more themes and frames, while discovering which ones have the SEO capabilities I need and the security that they owners will be around for continuing upgrade?

Hmmmm... tough one, that...

What frustrates me as much is knowing that someone like Jeanne (on this post) is given code to correct her problem. But has she ever worked with code before? Does she know where to use it? Does she have any idea how to find the editor?

You're great to follow up with me and with her... but I'm just surprised that a frame and theme set with so many users has to resort to work arounds so much of the time.

WHEN you cut back the number of header-right tabs (IF that solves the problem), look at David's site to see how menu items drop down from Guitarist:  http://davidchu.net/

You can have a few tabs and then sub-menu items just like that.

Charlie's jumping the gun here... I had to make a lot of changes to make dropdowns work up there.... geek required! So I'd suggest keeping the single level up there. 🙂

Alright guys, I changed the number of tabs to just 3 and the problem still exists.  Now what?  www.jeannenoorman.com  (And yes, my name is completely there when I remove the tabs.)

Dave, I have some very basic html knowledge, but don't have a clue where to put the code you suggested.  That is why I purchased Genesis and Education.

Would this be something to put in a help ticket for?  (Not sure how that works either.)

Go to Appearance... Editor. That takes you to a screen where you'll be editing style.css. But my bits of code in there, and save.

Thank you Dave.  I found the specific coding and just changed the widths to the ones you had suggested.  And it worked!  🙂  Thank you so much!

The drop down menus seem to be working in the tabs too!

So, do you know anything about using the sliders in the homepage?  I have a forum question on that as well.  Titled Education Homepage.

I had a wordpress site with a static homepage before I purchased Education.  Because of that, when I uploaded Education it defaulted to the static homepage without the sliders.  Any hints on how to put them up?

You're welcome. Interesting question about the slider. The simple answer is that a slider can be placed anywhere, in theory.

But the huge theme trend now is to have a big fancy homepage that's essentially a landing page, and significantly different from regular page templates. So the coder makes a big old homepage template, and if they didn't make an obvious place to put the slider, the neophyte may not know what to do.

Looking at Education, it could be the cleverly named "Slider" widget, or one of the 3 other homepage widgets, as long as the slider you have is widgetized. 🙂 But if you're referring to using one above the static homepage, you may need to try a slider's shortcode in the homepage content. Beyond that, possibly geek required.
