Hi, I'm having a blank ... I'm revamping a site that currently runs on Genesis 2.10.1 with the original News theme. I've set up a staging site with Genesis 3.3.1 and am using the News Pro theme there (with customisations).

How do I apply the new theme to the old live site? Can I zip up the customised News Pro theme and install it on the live site (running Genesis 2.10.1.) and then update Genesis? Or do I first upgrade Genesis and then install the News Pro theme?

If it is the latter, how do I do that with the old News theme running? Someone suggested just replacing the entire old site with the new (staging) one but that's not really something I want to do. I'm having nightmares that I'll screw up the existing site.

If the theme you are using is HTML5 based, you should just be able to update Genesis from the admin area the way you do any plugin or theme. If the child theme is XMHTL, it's not compatible with Genesis from Ver. 3.0 and higher. The Genesis developers removed XHTML support from the latest versions. In that case, you'd have to upgrade the child theme to an HTML5 version to use the latest Genesis.

Hi Victor, thank you. The current child theme on the live blog is the old News theme, XMHTL based, hence it is still running on Genesis 2.10.1

I am currently doing a relook of the blog, on a staging version of the blog. I am using the News Pro theme (HTML5) and Genesis 3.3.1 on that staging blog.

However, I do not know how I can transfer this new version of the theme from the staging blog to the current blog which has an XMHTL theme running on Genesis 2.10.1

In other words: I cannot upgrade Genesis on the live blog (as it currently runs on a XMHTL theme) but I also cannot transfer/apply the News Pro theme to the live blog, as it requires a higher version of Genesis. Catch 24?

I would suggest putting the Live site in maintenance mode. Then go to your file manager on your hosting account. Rename the old Genesis folder genesis-old. Then manually copy over the latest version of Genesis. Copy over News Pro into the theme folder. Log in to the Dashboard, immediately go to Appearance > Themes and activate News Pro. And then you can set things up. Once finished, turn off maintenance mode.
