How Can I add nested portfolio page on my Theme?

Hi,
I am looking for a Portfolio page and Art Gallery page of my website. I want it to function like http://stylebyemilyhenderson.com/portfolio/ and http://stylebyemilyhenderson.com/portfolio/fig-house-opening/

I tried doing it from these blogposts : http://wpsites.net/web-design/add-responsive-portfolio-page-to-lifestyle-pro/
I also tried the Bill Erickson post : http://www.billerickson.net/genesis-portfolio/

However one prob i have with both the above tutorials is that when i click on the featured image i want to be taken to a page which has more pictures of the project and not just enlarge the featured image.
Bill is also using the plugin 'Portfolio Post Type' . Is that the easy way to implement since it will be theme independent ?

Maybe my query is lame or I am not getting the logic, however i do not want to mess up the php code in my theme with little knowledge about coding that i have. I am using the "Beautiful Pro Theme ' which does not have the portfolio page.

Can someone help?

how to create a portfolio page in genesis

You would build a slider for each project, where the project-specific slider contains all of the photos for that one project.

That's what my tutorial does.

It links the featured image in the grid archive to the single page
