Hi, I'm new to the Genesis Platform. I thought it would save me lots of time getting websites up, and I planned to buy the whole package if I liked working with the theme I bought to use for a client's site (Agency). I do think it would once I learn it better, and it probably will, but right now I'm tearing out my hair and considering just going back to doing the old way of creating a custom theme myself from scratch.
Here's my problem: I need to put the home slider on a static front page for a business site (Agency theme) and have tried using the Widget Logic plugin per this thread http://www.studiopress.community/topic/agency-theme-static-homepage-with-slider/ but it just won't work.
I also tried adding the "feature box" as described in the same thread and that worked, but it's not the look I'm going for. I love the look of the home slider -- it looks terrific when the home page is set to the blog. It's a shame it won't work on a static home page. I then tried styling the "feature box" to look like the home page slider, but to no avail.
Where am I going wrong? Should it be so very hard to add the home slider to a static home page and retain the styling? Can anyone help me out here? Many thanks in advance!
The site is currently in "coming soon" mode (also running on my test server), so I can't give a url.
For someone who builds child themes from scratch, you will find this a walk in the park with any child themes running on Genesis.
Simply hook in a new widget area for the front page and use the same class for styling.
Change the hook position if needed.
You can remove the home page slider simply by deleting the home.php file.
By the way the code in this post works perfectly also.
As you see in the post, other people have used it successfully.
I always test my code on the same theme the member is using.

I get the slider fine, but it's ugly. I tried styling it the same in the stylesheet using #front-slider but nothing changed and it's still so ugly. Maybe I'm overtired and I just can't see where I'm making my mistake (all stressed out over family illness).

Try another Slider like Easing slider, Nivo slider or Soliloquy. All free.
I guess that's what I'll have to do. I already have the Nivo slider and it's nice. It's just that I loved the look of the styling on the Agency front page and liked the widgets underneath for directing visitors to other parts of the site (the online tutorials and so forth). I was surprised it only works when the blog is the home page -- it looks like an arrangement businesses would prefer for a static home page. I guess I'll have to add and style the other home page widgets, too. I was hoping this would save me all that time and trouble.

If you populate any of the widgets, the blog becomes deactivated and only the widget content is displayed.
Again, thanks! That's helpful information. My client wants to have a blog in his site. Nearly all do. This leaves me wondering why they coded this way. Why not have a static home page as default with all the wonderful widgets and leave open the option of having a regular blog? Then this theme would work beautifully for many of my projects and I'd probably buy the whole pro package.
Again, I think I must not understand the Genesis Framework -- after all, I just got started with it.
How were you able to style the slider on a static home page to look just like it does when the blog is the home page? This must be where I'm going wrong. There must be something I'm just not seeing. I'm feeling like a total idiot and hoping for a "duh" moment where I realize my stupid mistake and can then move on and keep plugging away on the site.

When you populate a home page widget, you home page becomes static.
Okay, but then what do I do about providing a blog section? I know I could set up a separate blog and link from the home menu, but that's clunky -- not to mention undesirable for a number of reasons.
I'm trying to figure out why the WidgetLogic plugin won't work. That would solve my whole problem. Is it incompatible with Genesis?
Is there some reason those home page widgets can't be transferred to a static home page, leaving the blog free for use as a blog?
The home.php file is a static page.
There are no posts listed on the home page of the Agency theme unless you add the featured post widgets.
Did you read the setup instructions?
Create a new page named Blog and select the blog page template from the Page Attributed under the Publish button.
Then add the url of that page to your menu.
Yay! Thanks to you, Ive now had that "duh!" moment and smacked myself on the forehead. Yes, I read the instructions. Why couldn't I see that before? I feel like such a ninny now.
I guess sometimes the stresses of life pile up on you and it taxes the old gray cells -- when those times come around, the kindness of strangers can make a huge difference. Thank you for taking the time to be so very kind to me and making that huge difference.
