I'm trying to customize my 404 error page. What I'd like to do is simple enough, but the 404 code is part of the Genesis parent theme and it specifically warns me not to make any changes. I am using the Smart Passive Income Pro child theme.

Can anyone tell me how I can update my 404 page without disturbing the parent code?

    My website: http://www.investinggoldnow.com

    Thanks!!
    Scott

    Hi Scott,

you can just copy the 404.php from the parent theme to the child theme and make your changes in the copied file.

Thanks for your quick reply Christoph. I'm not sure how to copy the 404.php to the child theme. Can you tell me how to do that?

    Thanks, I appreciate your help!

    Hi Scott,
I've found this plugin is the easiest way to create custom 404 pages.

    Genesis 404 Page

It hasn't been updated in a while but I'm currently using on several sites with WP 4.7 and Genesis 2.4.2 and various child themes.

    Hope this helps.

Scott, if you're using the Genesis 404 Plugin, that comes with a short code that you can use in your page:

    [genesis-404-search]
