    This weekend, two sites I host on WP Engine both started having 500 errors, and my IT plus WP Engine support zeroed in on line 24 of core Genesis theme's header.php file as culprit. They commented out this line (yes, I know you're never really supposed to edit Genesis core), which cleared the 500 errors, but now there are significant display issues with the sites. Any idea what might be going on? We're very new to WP Engine by the way; one site has been there a month, and the other just moved this past week. Here's chat log with WP Engine support:

    Hi Shanu,
    Thanks for calling in again. I was able to get the site back up by commenting out line 24 of wp-content/themes/genesis/header.php, which was referenced in the error I sent in my initial response. The site is now loading again.
    For your dev's reference, that line of code (now commented out) is:

    22 /*genesis_markup( array(
     23     'html5'   => '<body %s>^M
     24 <script type="application/javascript">var toggleMenu = function(){var m = document.getElementById('wporg-header-menu'),c = m.className;m.className =
     25     'xhtml'   => sprintf( '<body %s>^M
     26 <script type="application/javascript">var toggleMenu = function(){var m = document.getElementById('wporg-header-menu'),c = m.className;m.className =
     27     'context' => 'body',
     28 ) );
     29 */

    Please let us know if you have any other questions or issues in the meantime.

    Hi Drew,
    Please see below the findings from our end.
    [Sat Jan 21 19:27:01.873237 2017] [:error] [pid 27328] [client 207.46.13.135:45336] PHP Warning: mysql_real_escape_string(): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) in /nas/content/live/b2binsight/wp-content/plugins/permalink-finder/includes/pf-404.php on line 621
    This is consistent with a 500 error and would indicate that the blog cannot connect to the MySQL DB.
    Could you please look in to this issue.?
    Thanks,

    This error is referencing the theme's header file. Please let us know if you have any other questions or issues in the meantime.

    Those lines that are commented out are not even in header.php! There are no references to any scripts. Any chance your site was hacked?

    I would download a fresh copy of the Genesis Framework and reinstall it.

    Thanks Victor, I appreciate you looking at it. It turned out to be my Cache plug in that was causing the error. I diabled it and now it's working fine. Thanks
