Just noticed the new sample theme has the new auto set-up and onboarding features which might be useful for a full theme with front page widgets, but seems pointless (and annoying) for a base theme.

Also, with the inclusion of 'template-blocks.php' and a recommendation to install Atomic Blocks plugin, it looks like we will be 'forced' to use Atomic Blocks in future themes to justify the acquisition.

The reason I chose Genesis in the first place was the bare minimum files and code. I hope it doesn't become bloated with all the additional 'enhancements'.

The auto setup creates a Gutenberg-based homepage so users can see the site as it looks in the demo version. It has nothing to do with setting up a widgetized home page. The sample theme is the only theme that this feature works with so far.

The template-blocks.php file in the sample theme forces the full-width layout, removes breadcrumbs, header markup, and the page title. There are no blocks associated with it. It's essentially similar to a landing page template.

I sincerely doubt Atomic blocks will be forced on anyone. If you want some additional functionality added to Gutenberg, then use it. If not, then don't. Plugins are always optional.
