I'm accustomed to AppFinite's portfolio pages. It seems Studio Press is taking a different route to provide portfolio pages. Rather than creating a widgeted page, Studio Press is creating a custom post type (or so it seems to behave) which means all content for the portfolio pages would be outside the organized structure of categories of standard posts. At times connecting the two isn't possible.

I don't fully understand the reasoning behind this. There is an advantage of having multiple portfolio categories labeled "types" which is nice for some users.

Some of the newer themes don't come with this portfolio layout. I added one to the new Agency-Pro theme
    http://websentia.com/portfolio/
and although it is in need of styling work, I find the inability to include excerpts or post-content-limit to be quite a hindrance.

    So I faked a portfolio-look-alike page here
    http://websentia.com/category/web-portfolio/
    all done with CSS.

I wonder what are people's thoughts on the new portfolio setup with some of the recent Pro themes, even Studio Press people...what are the advantages, disadvantages, personal preferences, etc that cause you to choose one option or the other?

    Hi,

I created a custom portfolio page for my site based on the genesis original.

You can add or more content as you see fit and include categories if you want.

stinkykong I too am accustomed to Appfinite and so switching over to Studiopress has been terrible. It makes little sense, and has been very frustrating. What I thought would be a quick change-over has been weeks in the redevelopment and redesign of something that really worked.

I'm considering hiring Wes to put the functionality into the the Minimum Pro theme. It was well thought out and worked beautifully.

pxforti, thanks for your link. There's a lot to learn there. I want to be able to put the content-limit in as well and I bet there is a way to do that....just haven't found time to research

    however

The Appfinite Themes such as Ally and Epik have the portfolio deriving from a defined category with similar choices to the Featured Post widgets that come with Genesis. I would love to hear about the advantages of the new Geneisis 2.0 portfolio over Wes Straham's method.

walidmrealtor, yes, Wes is great to work with when you can get attention from his busy schedule. But I think that if you already have a theme that uses the portfolio set up, the pieces are there for the picking, if you can get them all.
