Full width header & footer {Prose}

Hello,

Newbie here. I am trying to get my header and footer to stretch the full width of the screen as explained here: http://genesistutorials.com/genesis-structural-wraps-creating-a-full-width-genesis-child-theme/. The instructions given in this article specifically says to use the style.css sheet, however I know this is a no-no in prose because of the custom code feature. I have looked and looked for instructions on how to do this with prose, but I am not seeing anything that makes sense.

How do I go about getting this setup using the prose custom code sheet?

You can copy the relevant portions of your style.css file into Genesis --> Custom Code --> Custom CSS and then modify the widths to suit your site. Generally, if a tutorial tells you to change the style.css file, you can mentally translate that to something like "paste this code into Prose's custom code screen."

That particular tutorial looks like it was for Genesis 1.6. You may want to check with its author to see if it's still valid for Genesis 1.9.x.

Looking at the Genesis Visual Markup Guide may help you figure out which sections of the site you need to modify.

Oh, okay. I will contact the author and ask if this works on the newest version of Genesis.

Yes, I am wanting the header and the footer to span the entire screen like on your link. I did try adding the relevant portions into Custom CSS and changing them there, but either I am doing it wrong (which is very likely the case) or the steps in the article don't work in this version of Genesis.

If I change the header and footer will it change the way my site reads on a smart phone or different size screen?

Yes, a fixed-width header will eventually get chopped off on a smaller screen. A footer is usually easier to handle since it's made up of separate elements (the 3 footer widgets, which will eventually stack on a smaller screen, and the main footer is made up of two divs that will do the same thing).

Nick the Geek has been working on a plugin called Genesis Responsive Header, which lets you upload several different sizes of header for display on various smaller screens.
