full width div above sidebar

[janburg]

How do I put a full width area above the regular column/sidebar setup? My client wants a full width slider below the nav bar and above the rest of the page on the home page only. The previous solutions offered here on the forum didn't work, perhaps because they are 2 years old and outdated or perhaps because I don't know what I'm doing - probably the latter. I can work css, copy and paste php if you are specific on where to do that.

Thanks for your help,
jan

should have noted I'm using Genesis frameworks with a child theme.
