Media is not included in demo content because it's licensed to Studio Press, not for distribution. Here's what the instructions say:

While you have no intellectual property rights to use this content on a live website, you may use “dummy” content for staging and configuration purposes. The images shown in the theme demos are not licensed for redistribution. The imported images will be gray placeholder images.

Oh right... makes sense. I was just hoping the home page layout & top navigation bar would appear (even if media was gray boxes) but I got nothing. The sample pages & posts are there however.
