I'm trying to create a custom landing page using the default elven40 pro template. I've added the header from the rest of my site, which i want, minus the menu items. I've also added some dummy content areas for now and a title for the page.

The problem I have is either side of the content (highlighted in the image link below in yellow) area which is white, is the same blue as my header and I want to change that to white. But whatever i try in css doesn't work.

You can see the issue in the image below

I'd just like everything under the header within the yellow highlighted areas to be white. I don't know what this area is called I've tried using firebug but just can't get it.

In addition to this there is no space between the title and the bottom of the header seen in the image in the orange circle, I have been able to inspect this element in firebug and i have been able to make change to the padding above the title in firebug, which worked. However once i make the changes in css update the file and refresh the page theres still no gap even though the css changes have happened. I have cleared my cache and done a hard refresh.

Some work is required on your behalf.

You will need to learn how to use Firebug to customize the CSS code for styling your theme. http://www.studiopress.com/tips/using-firebug.htm
