Education Pro – home-top widget area tweak ?

I really like the Education Pro theme for a website I'm working on for a client. Thing is, she has asked me if I can put two widgets side-by-side under the tagline widget in the home-top widget area.

In other words, she wants to keep that widget that has the big text that extends across the responsive slider, but below that, she wants two widgets for news and events side-by-side.

I was thinking if I just did this it would work, but it appears to cause the left-hand widget to be positioned above the right-hand widget, even though they are each only taking up 50% of the width.

#tribe-events-list-widget-2 > div {
width: 50%;
float: left;
}

#featured-post-3 > div {
width: 50%;
float: right;
}

I had planned to use a media query to allow them to be full width on anything smaller than a laptop screen. I know how to do that part if I have the other part styled correctly.

Any advice would be appreciated!
