Drop down list of subcategories

On my genesis child theme blog, I'm gonna have, say, two categories: Recipes and Dogs. (difference won't be that dramatic but you get the idea.) Each will have its own list of sub-cats.

I'd like a "category" (so to speak) list on the Recipes page that only displays recipe subcategories. 'Cause it would look ridiculous for people to see, say, obedience training as a choice category next to waffles.

Is there an easy way to effect this with Genesis? If something could automatically scoop up all the sub-cats for Recipes, great... but at this point, I'd even be happy with how to make a drop down list that would let me bung in the sub cat choices by hand..... Even if i have to buy a plug in, fine! The Genesis extender people didn't think their plug-in could do this.

hey everybody, over the course of 6 hours of searching, experimenting, reading, backtracking, the best I found for displaying subcategories as an actionable drop down choice is a plugin called "List Custom Taxonomy Widget" by Nick Halsey.
