Simplest solution might be to use the Genesis Featured Widget Amplified plugin from the awesome Nick Croft instead, grab it here:

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/genesis-featured-widget-amplified/

It gives you finer control over such things. I end up using it on almost every project I do.
