    I am trying to change the background color for the post author's (admin) comments as per this thread.

    While

    .comment-author-USERNAME {
    background-color: #ddd !important;
    }

    works fine, it will also change the background for subsequent REPLIES to the post autor’s comments, which kind of defeats the purpose.

    Does anyone know how to style these nested comments so that they appear with the standard background color?

    Try this -

    
    .comment.bypostauthor .children .comment {
      background-color: #fff;
    }
    .comment.bypostauthor {
      background-color: red;
    }
