This is going to be a bit of Doh! question... bit embarrassing really, since I've been using Genesis for so long.

I've always edited style.css and functions.php directly, meaning I never update the child themes for fear of breaking these files or losing my edits.

I've been using a few Themedy child themes for Genesis lately, and there, I can just create a custom.css and custom_functions.php file and put those in the "custom" folder. Then I just copy the styles or functions from the original files and paste them into the respective custom files and edit them there. Because they load last, the styles or functions there take precedence over the originals.

So, my question is. For Genesis Child Themes what would be the correct way of making custom style and function sheets? Can I just do as above with like with Themedy and create a custom folder to hold them and they will work out of the box with those names (custom.css and custom_functions.php. OR do I possibly just edit the originals as I have usually done, but when it comes time to update the child theme simply replace all the files with the new ones EXCEPT style.css and functions.php, or do those need to be replaced for the update to be effective. As in, when there is a child them update, are only the core chid theme files updated or are the style and functions files updated too?

Lots of questions. Please enlighten me.

Child themes don't update but if they did, you can add the custom CSS and custom PHP to the new theme files.

    Or

    Create a custom functionality plugin.
