I have a question about developers and how they create custom themes. If I use the Genesis sample as a starting point, rename it as a custom theme and start making changes is that the way to go? Or would I make a child theme of the child theme so changes don't get overridden when the child theme is updated? So I would change:

Theme Name: Genesis Sample - to my new theme name
Description: This is the sample theme created for the Genesis Framework. - add my description
    	Author: StudioPress - change
    	Author URI: http://www.studiopress.com/ - change
    	Version: 2.0.0

Is this ethical? I have a psd I'm trying to incorporate into a custom theme and just trying to figure out the best way possible. I see plenty of tutorials on customizing existing child themes but none on creating a custom theme. Suggestions??

Genesis Sample Theme is meant to be starter theme. You can change name and other information details to get started with custom theme development.
