A long time ago, when I didn't know any better, and the Genesis Sample child theme wasn't available yet, I built a really very involved site on Genesis 1.8.2. Yes, I know I'm an idiot.

Well, the time has come that I really, REALLY need to update it but I know it's going to destroy my site. Is there any way to take the theme I am using and turn it into a Genesis child theme and run it with the current version of Genesis as the parent theme? Then I can keep the site I built intact and still be able to do the Genesis updates as they arrive.

    Thank you in advance!

It's hard to say without seeing what you did to the code. In general, you should be able to copy your modifications from the framework into a child theme and then update the framework. I wouldn't want to attempt that on a live production site however. Can you clone your site into a development instance or on your local machine, make the update, and see what happens without impacting your production site?

I actually tried that last night but for reasons I don't understand, no cloning or migration tools will work on the original site. The plugins show up with half the stuff missing, no graphics and the buttons do nothing. I have tried turning off all other plugins, in case it was a conflict, but it didn't make any difference. If I do a fresh WP install in another directory (with a slightly newer version of WP) all those plugins work fine but they will not work on the source site. I'm at my wits end. I feel so stupid!

Most cloning tools are meant to move a site from one url to another machine with the same url. URLs are embedded throughout your content in the database. You have to make sure that whatever tool you use can update the embedded Urls to reflect the new site. I generally use the Updraft Plus pro version for moving sites. It will search and replace urls in the database. You could use a plugin like better search and replace after the site is cloned. Either will work, but if you don't take this step, you'll end up with a site with missing content and widgets, exactly what you experienced.
