    Or should I create a child theme of that Sample theme?

    I don't want to lose changes due to updates, am I at risk to do so when directly modfying the Genesis Child Theme Sample?

    Hi,

    Upload both Genesis Framework and Genesis child theme in the theme folder and activate the Genesis child theme and make changes to it.
    In future; Genesis Framework will get updates and that won't affect the changes you will have made to the genesis sample child theme as that does not get updated so you don't have to worry at all.
