    So, after much trial and error and many hours spent getting nowhere! I have a problem with backstretch not working anymore.

    I'm using the jquery supplied with many of the themes (http://www.jquery-backstretch.com/).

    I have had this up and running on sites in the past and they are still ok. However, I have downloaded themes that have been recently updated and I can no longer get it to work, ie it simply does not stretch the image.

    I have tried it in various genesis themes and I have even tried downloading the latest version of the jquery. Nothing works! Pulling hair out!!

    Please, is anybody able to help before I am committed!!

    [edit] I have just tried the backstretch in WP's default theme twenty sixteen and it's still not working in that!!! I am wondering if the problem started when I began downloading themes to my iMac. Previously I had a PC. I have heard that Mac's can download zipped files differently?

    You aren't loading the backstretch jQuery, and even if you were I don't it would work the way you are loading the image. Your CSS is setting background-size to auto. If you change it to cover, it will stretch the image horizontally without jQuery.
