i constantly have migration issues when i move a studio press site where the home page is mainly all widget areas. After the migration i end up spending an hour or more fixing the widgets that are all empty.
what am i doing wrong? I can't show a URL because i am working off a modified host file - this has happened to me several times?
October 30, 2017 at 7:11 am #213077Victor FontModeratorThis is normal. Since widgets were first introduced in WordPress V2.2, their content is stored as serialized arrays and mapped to its sidebar in the wp_options table. It is impossible to know how a theme developer will create sidebar areas. Because of the developer's free will in creating the theme, when you change themes, the chances of sidebars being identical in two themes is very slim. When WordPress loads, it should place the previous theme's widgets in the inactive widget list. You should only have to drag and drop them into the new widget areas.

Have you requested your free website audit yet?October 30, 2017 at 7:17 am #213078briansthomasMemberthank you so much for the reply! however i am not changing themes. I am just changing hosting companies in this case. What can i do? I tried to use a special plugin WP Migrate DB that supposedly migrates the serialized date but it didn't seem to work in my case.
Is there anything i can go?
October 30, 2017 at 7:19 am #213079briansthomasMemberI looked in the widget area and over half are just empty.
October 30, 2017 at 7:39 am #213083Victor FontModeratorI would ask the question of the WP Migrate DB developers, then. This has nothing to do with Genesis or your theme.

I found out it has to do with how widgets are stored using serialized data. Not all of them copy when migrating.
If the page URLs are different lengths they screw the serialized array up and you end up loosing them.
In this case i had to redo about 6 widget areas where some had 5 widgets = total pain

I have not completely figured out why the problem occurs in only certain cases - sometimes i migrate and don't have the issue and other times i do
