Agency Theme Page Excerpts for Widgets?

Can a featured page widget show an excerpt like featured post widget on the home page?

Hi,
A qualified "yes". That widget has plenty of useful settings, one of which is "Show Page Content". You could select that, and then just make sure to also fill in "Content Character Limit" and "More text".

If you're looking to have this widget show up somewhere other than the sidebar, your theme will need to be set up for that. Many Genesis themes are set up this way.

Thanks, Dave, I mean "excerpt", in other words, not the first bit of the page content, but a chosen bit of text, the way the post offers to show excerpt or content in the widget.

Would this need a custom area on the page itself? I appreciate all help on this!

Ah! I think I follow you now. You must be referring to the explicit excerpt on a Post, when you want to override the standard chunk of text that is sampled for a Post excerpt. I almost never use those, so they don't come to mind. And to underscore my point, unless you do an explicit excerpt, WP will just give you a chunk of text from the beginning of the article when a widget, plugin, or PHP code asks for an excerpt.

The simple answer is that there is no explicit excerpt for Pages, so yes, you'll need some other field to get that. And because of that, the Genesis Featured Page widget is not set up for that. So custom coding needed if you want that. Is it worthwhile doing that? Sure, if they want to spend the money and time. 🙂

Thanks, Dave. I decided to put the "excerpt" on the page itself at the beginning, that way the widget pulls it first. Formatting the text in italics with a rule underneath, gives it a feeling of an introductory paragraph. A quick workaround!
