I'm trying to setup a redirect of a page i deleted I'd prefer doing through my ftp by accessing the .htaccess file which i managed to edit ok but the redirect didn't work. These are the new and old pages...
    deleted page:
    http://newedgemarketing.com.au/online-marketing-assessment/

    New Page:
    http://newedgemarketing.com.au/assessment/

    Tried:
    redirect 301 online-marketing-assessment http://newedgemarketing.com.au/assessment
    and also:
    redirect 301 online-marketing-assessment.html http://newedgemarketing.com.au/assessment.html

any any ideas, didn't really want to use a plugin but will do for now.

Once again, the forums are eating my posts for including too many links.

So you'll have to read up on the 3 different redirect plugins I use by finding them at the repository by searching: Quick Page/Post Redirect, Redirection, and Redirect List

As for your .htaccess recipe, try this:

    Redirect 301 /online-marketing-assessment/ http://newedgemarketing.com.au/assessment/

or if you are getting incoming requests for the old URL without the trailing slash, try this:

    Redirect 301 /online-marketing-assessment/?$ http://newedgemarketing.com.au/assessment/

    Try this http://wpsites.net/wordpress-admin/301-redirect-in-functions-file/

Or you could use the Genesis SEO settings.

There are 3 plugins that I use, depending on site need, Redirection, Quick Page/Post Redirect, and Redirect List.

But for your .htaccess solution, try this:

    Redirect 301 /online-marketing-assessment/ http://newedgemarketing.com.au/assessment/

If you have issues where incoming links are using the old link without the trailing slash, try this:

    Redirect 301 /online-marketing-assessment/?$ http://newedgemarketing.com.au/assessment/
