Hey Porter.
So here's my process:
1) Each pin is created as a png. Each one is unique and created only for that specific post; no pin will ever be on more than 1 pg on the site
2) Each pin is uploaded to the media library
3) I created a custom sidebar for the post using Genesis Simple Sidebars
4) I go to the Appearance/Widgets section and add a Text widget to the newly created custom sidebar
5) I then put coding into the widget - just regular image coding which includes the URL of the pin (from my media library)
Ihope that answers your questions. Please remember that each pin HAS to be on the same pg as the post it was created for
Thanks!
turtledoveMemberHey Porter.
Thanks for your response. I know this set up is unconventional but here's why I have it like that:
My site is an affiliate site and it's made up of short (ie around 100 words) posts which are essentially product descriptions. One of the main sources of traffic is Pinterest and that means that I have to have a pin for each post and each pin has to be on the pg of the post it corresponds to.
That way I can then pin my pins to my Pinterest boards and link back to the specific post that the pin is from.
After experimenting with different options, the best solution to getting each Pinterest pin on the same pg as its corresponding post was to put it in a custom sidebar.
So the content that goes into each sidebar is unique in that each sidebar has a completely different - and unique - Pinterest pin, created specifically for that post.
I hope that makes sense!
I've already contacted StudioPress tech support but they couldn't help but they did say there may be a customized css solution and suggested I reach out in the WP and StudioPress forums.
October 24, 2015 at 12:24 pm in reply to: permalinks settings causing my post content to disappear #168911turtledoveMemberI'm still having an issue with content disappearing after I hit the publish button so I wanted to update this thread and see if anyone can help.
Here's what's gone on in the past wk: I've changed hosting companies - from Bluehost to WP Engine - and migrated my site over. Even after changing hosting companies, the problem persisted.
WPE's tech support - which is awesome, BTW - has been on it. The first thing they did was rule out an issue with the theme by changing me to the default 2015 WP theme. After they'd reverted me to the default theme they deleted both Genesis and Lifestyle Pro and then they republished one of my posts, but the problem persisted - the content was gone.
The next thing they tried seems to fix the issue but I still don't completely understand it. Here's their explanation:
Problem: When publishing a draft, the post would appear normal when previewing, but when viewing through the permalink URL after publishing, only the post image was being displayed.
Reason: This was determined to be due to the post and image using the same post_name value in the database, causing the image to be loaded instead of the full post when accessing the permalink.
When you visit a permalink ,WordPress will look in the bfposts table of the database for a row with a matching post_name value. WordPress will then load this row from the database, displaying the post content. However since the image and the post have the same post_name values, and the image was added to the database first, the image is loaded instead of the post.
Solution: To prevent this issue, we simply need to change the title of the image (which is what the post_name value is created from) to something different than the post title. By changing the title of the image, the post_name value is changed as well. This prevents the image from being loaded instead of the post no matter what the order of the rows is.
So as I understand it, basically he's saying that it's a WP glitch that happens from time to time but here's what I don't understand:
It started happening all of a sudden and with no recent WP update. If it would have started happening right after a WP update then I could understand, but the fact is this: I published about 15 or 20 posts without any issues at all AFTER I'd updated WP and THEN it started happening.
For SEO purposes, I use the exact same title for both the post itself and for the featured image title. His fix is to make the title of the image slightly different than the post title itself. So, for example, he went into the media library and added 'img' onto the end of the image titles for one of the posts, published that post and it worked just fine.
After I'd received his answer with the fix, I went into my dashboard and published 7 posts that had been sitting in 'draft' form. 4 of them published just fine when I hit the 'publish' button but 3 of them, when I published them, lost all their content.
So I went into the media library and added 'img' to the end of each image title for those 3 posts, went back and republished the posts and they published just fine. I did all of that within a 5 minute time frame.
So his fix certainly seems to work. But given that 4 of them published fine with no alteration to the image title file name but the other 3 had to have altered image file titles in order to publish properly, the issue seems transient and very random to me.
Is it possible that it's just some random WP glitch that's hitting some posts and not others?
Can anyone make heads or tails out of this?
turtledoveMemberOf course I've filed a ticket with Synthesis support - that's the first thing I did.
My main reason for starting this thread was to make people aware of what had happened to me and see if anyone had experienced anything similar or if anyone had any suggestions or could help me.
You may be right - Synthesis may never see this and that's OK because I've already filed a support ticket with them and getting help from them wasn't the main reason for this post.
On the other hand, I have no idea who comes onto the StudioPress forum so I have no way of knowing who will respond. But what I can say for sure is that in the past I've had all kinds of help from the StudioPress forum, not limited to just StudioPress issues and I've also seen a lot others get responses from within this forum that had to do with issues other than StudioPress. That's one of the things I love about this forum - you never know who's going to see the post and respond or what kind of help you'll be able to get.
So let's just call my original post a 'sharing of my concerns' and let it go at that.
turtledoveMemberYes - I understand that Susan but I've read through some of the other thread about Synthesis and there were a couple that got a response from a senior Synthesis person so that's what I was thinking.
Also, I do think it's important that other people are aware of this type of thing and I'm sure there are other people who have StudioPress themes that also deal with Synthesis.
But I do see what you're saying and I appreciate the feedback.
October 7, 2015 at 9:15 am in reply to: permalinks settings causing my post content to disappear #167614turtledoveMemberAs I mentioned in my original post, I've already contacted my hosting company - 5 times to be exact - and they can't help me with the problem. That's why I'm posting here.
August 16, 2015 at 5:02 pm in reply to: Lifestyle Pro removing thin grey lines on internal pages #162570turtledoveMemberThat worked perfectly - thank you so much Marcy!
turtledoveMemberThanks Victor. I think I've found the section you're referring to. Can you explain what I have to add or alter to get the borders around the widget boxes?
June 16, 2015 at 5:51 pm in reply to: Lifestyle Pro – change the height of the secondary navigation menu #156455turtledoveMemberHey Christoph.
Thanks so much for your quick reply and help. That worked perfectly!
Cheers. Debbie
turtledoveMemberThanks for your input Ren. Are you able to customize Zemanta's plugin so that you get to choose which Related Posts show below any given post? (as opposed to the plugin pulling random posts from around your website)
turtledoveMemberThank so much Christoph! I'll give it a go.
turtledoveMemberHey Christoph,
I'm back and am wondering if you can tell me exactly how to increase the sizes for smaller screens. I'n not at all familiar with changing css so I'm not sure how to do it in this instance.When I checked the css file I was looking for coding that had to do with smaller screen sizes (ie 240 or 320) but there's nothing there so perhaps I have to add some coding in to include those screen sizes?
Here's what I'm seeing in my media queries section (I've only copied the parts that I think have something to do with screen sizes; after these sections, the media queries go on to the site header, sidebar, etc sections):
/*
Media Queries

@media only screen and (-webkit-min-device-pixel-ratio: 1.5),
only screen and (-moz-min-device-pixel-ratio: 1.5),

only screen and (min-device-pixel-ratio: 1.5) {.search-form input[type="search"] {
background-image: url(images/[email protected]);
}}
@media only screen and (max-width: 1139px) {.footer-widgets,
.site-container,

@media only screen and (max-width: 1023px) {.footer-widgets,

}.content-sidebar-sidebar .content-sidebar-wrap,

}Thanks again for your help!
turtledoveMemberThanks for the clarification Christoph. I'll look into changing some of the media queries.
turtledoveMemberThanks for your response Christoph. I just checked my functions.php file and the exact coding you specify is definitely in there.
Do you know if there's any other coding I have to add (in addition to what's already there)?
April 17, 2015 at 11:31 pm in reply to: Lifestyle pro — Changing the color of the Submit button on my Contact pg #148302turtledoveMemberGot it. Thanks Brad.
April 11, 2015 at 9:06 am in reply to: Lifestyle Pro Theme — What plugin is best for inserting tables? #147497turtledoveMemberBrad -- did you mean use the HTML from a theme which already includes a table by default? If so, can you give me an example of a theme that has default tables? Thanks so much!
turtledoveMemberThanks for replying Brad.
So I cropped my header to 1140X150 (I can't change the height as it was custom made at that height) and changed the coding in the functions.php file to reflect a height of 150 and width of 1140. But when I upload that to my site it's still not showing the entire header; I'm still only seeing about 1/3 of it sort and the part I'm seeing is sitting towards the left hand side of the container, in the middle of that section. I have a caching plugin so I've emptied the cache to be sure that wasn't an issue and that didn't help either.
I'm following the instructions in http://wpsites.net/web-design/customize-lifestyle-pro-theme-header-image-area/ but I haven't even gotten to the style.css changes yet because I can't get the header to look as it should (according to the instructions) with the changes I've made to the functions.php file yet.
Any suggestions?
turtledoveMemberThanks for clarifying that Susan. Good to know that both the content and sidebar width can be adjusted!
turtledoveMemberHey David,
Thanks so much for your reply and that makes total sense because it's basically how I set a static home pg with my current theme. Cheers! -
