OK, I guess I used this setting when I tried a different theme. The setting isn't available in Essence. When I switched to Essence Pro, the setting didn't reset. I received this from StudioPress Support:
Thank you for reaching out to us.There is not an option in Essence Pro to change the overlay color without editing the theme code. You will find an option to change the color on the links by going to Appearance ==> Customize ==> Colors.
To adjust the darkness or color of the header in Essence requires editing a PHP file in the child theme files.
You will need to edit this line in essence-pro/lib/header-functions.php file:
$output = '<style type="text/css">.header-hero { background-image: linear-gradient(0deg, rgba(0,0,0,0.5) 50%, rgba(0,0,0,0.85) 100%), url(' . esc_url( $bg_image ) . '); }</style>';
Reducing the 0.5 and 0.85 values there will make the overlay more transparent, with 0 being fully transparent. For example, this will make it a little lighter:
$output = '<style type="text/css">.header-hero { background-image: linear-gradient(0deg, rgba(0,0,0,0.4) 50%, rgba(0,0,0,0.65) 100%), url(' . esc_url( $bg_image ) . '); }</style>';
Keep in mind, we highly recommend using FTP or your host’s file manager to edit PHP files instead of the WordPress editor. A typo or missing comma could cause your site to show the “white screen of death” and could kick you out of your dashboard completely. If that happens, you’ll need to use FTP or a file manager to remove the code and regain access to your site. So if you are already using FTP or the file manager to make those changes, you’ll be able to remove them quickly if needed.
We have a guide on safely editing child theme files using FTP access at:https://my.studiopress.com/documentation/ftp-guide/
Thank you and have a wonderful day!
Shelley_EParticipantI tried putting the code suggested by anitac into the CSS editor, and got the message to add '.custom-background to my body selector'. I have no clue what a body selector is.
I also don't understand why we're given the option to change the background in the theme settings, but when choosing a color, the background remains white. I'm experiencing this with Metro, but get the same results with other themes on other blogs. I get that this kind of thing is second nature to those who know a lot about coding, but Genesis is not only marketed to those individuals, it's also marketed to dummies like me. 😉
- So, still need to know how to change the background color.
I can upload and use an image, but the file size of my image is too huge, loads slowly probably because it's sucking so much bandwidth. Â So, need to figure out how to make the file size of the my image smaller while still having it take up the entire background and not be tiled. It would be great to get rid of the stark white background while I educate myself about the image thing.

 I may try that if I get more proficient with php, but every time I've tried to edit php with any of my WordPress blogs, I mess everything up - either immediately or later on when I want to make changes and need to remove code I've entered or add code I had removed. However, I came up with a solution that works great for me: I created an image with my tagline and used it with a JetPack Image widget in the Header Right area.

P.S. One of the things I love most about Genesis is the Edit CSS feature. I can experiment and if I hose something up, when I remove the code from Edit CSS everything goes back into place. If I could do that with php, I would try your fix immediately.

I do not understand what kay9 wrote:Â 1. for the tagline, the code will say “removes the description”. Then it will be that line of code.
Hope to hear something soon, or maybe I just need to open a support ticket.
