    appreciate the 'redirect' Victor, i'll take a look at the older themes to see if i can't find one that shows the CSS required and then use as starting point to creating a more consistent CSS with newer themes - Formidable Pro looks like a nice plugin as well (thanks for the suggestion) - we've purchased / work with Gravity for many integrations etc so we're sort of down that rabbit hole at this point

    for anyone else who might be trying to accomplish this ... here's what i did

    removed or commented out the instructions to float the content right in the original child stylesheet - then added back in the CSS floats for the two layouts that involve the content being on the right
    NOTE: the width was already 720px which was fine by me (stays 'true' to the theme / grid), but i suppose you could adjust

    /* Content */

    .content {
    	/*float: right;*/
    	width: 720px;
    }

    .sidebar-sidebar-content .content,
    .sidebar-content .content {
    	float: right;
    }

    that adjusted the width of the content and then i added added this to my custom CSS sheet to effectively centre the content (not sure exactly how it works but sourced via other theme code)

    .full-width.content .content {
    margin: 0 auto;
    }

    seems to work - and now I have a full width post that is narrow vs original 100% - next step is to figure out how to maintain images / sliders that expand to use the true full width (1080px) of the site

    thanks Brad - helpful resource - i can manage to get the content area correct but the repetition of class names within the theme cases problems ...

    .full-width-content .entry-content {
    width: 720px;
    margin: 0 auto;
    }

    seems to narrow and centre the entry-content of the actual post but it also effects the entry-content of my widgets as well - seeing as they too have the same section class structure - i'm looking up the proper way to isolate a class (maybe i have things in the wrong order within the CSS or something)

    the other issue is how to have the text be constrained but not the images - i'll keep digging

    thanks for the links / direction Kellylise,

    not advanced enough to use the hooks (yet) and the links provided are to paid membership sites (which would be fine if we knew that the content would work / is relevant to what we require - but without that don't see them as helpful or relevant within a support forum)

    thanks Christoph - i've tried that (and in a few variations) but that changes all of my entry content - so if i want the typeface larger while reading posts it also bumps up in the widgets etc - no worries, i'm at the point of changing themes anyway, Studiopress is way behind the mainstream from a design perspective

    thanks Brad - i'm looking at those options now - guess the primary difference (and i did not explain it too well) is that the slider in this case is attached to the specific post (photo gallery type) and not a general slider that pulls in featured content / posts etc (in other words i don't want the slider on all post pages)
    - i'm thinking that it is more of a template issue otherwise if we use a lot of these our functions file will get pretty bloated - using the Royal slider
