perhaps if you can post a part of your functions.php file containing the snippet itself, the one above & the one below so we can try to find out what's going wrong?

Could be a small typo that's causing it not to work...

The problem isn't padding or margins but your theme's width (960px) is wider than your background (920px)...

If you add this to your css, it should remove the whitespaces on the left & right side of your theme :

#wrap {
width: 920px;
}

If I got things right & Chrome Developer Tools are right 😉

Go to the "Edit page" of the page you want to change, scroll down to the "Layout section" and click on the thumbnail which show just the header & content area without the sidebar as like in this image :

Make sure to hit "Update" and your sidebar should be gone.
