thanks a lot! Indeed the answer was to be found in the featured_image post on github, and also in a post about Genesis 3.1 Beta: the modern way of doing this is using
remove_action( 'genesis_entry_content', 'genesis_do_singular_image', 8 );, not remove_action( 'genesis_entry_content', 'genesis_do_post_image', 8 );.

It probably would be helpful if this was mentioned in the Genesis Code Snippets.

My question as well, to which I haven't found an answer in many many Google searches.
The only working solution so far is to use the Genesis Sandbox Featured Content Widget, which unfortunately messes up the order of title - post info - post excerpt (at least I haven't been able to get it to do it this way).
