MemberGlad I could pass on what I learned. I have tried it with posts as well, and it worked for me. Just set the type of content to posts, then followed the other steps but entered post IDs instead of page IDs. Right now I'm sticking with pages because I don't have images wide enough to go with my posts. This is my happy medium for the moment!

MemberI found a post on another site that helped me with the pages vs. posts issue and I've changed my slider to display pages instead of posts. I was also confused by the taxonomy and terms, and didn't really mess with it. I wanted to set mine to display only one page for now, because I don't have a lot of images on hand that fit the full width of the slider. So, for the time being I got an image that would work for a Welcome page and set the slider for only that page. But you could easily include additional pages with the settings I'll list here. Here's what I did:
Set Type of Content to pages.
Skipped the two taxonomy fields
Skipped the category, tag, taxonomy to exclude field
On the "choose include/exclude" field, I set it to "include"
Listed the one page ID I wanted to use, then set number of slides to show at 1
One thing that also had me stumped was the page ID -- I had no idea where to find that because this is the first occasion I've had to need it. Just in case you also don't know how to find it, go to your All Pages screen. Hover your pointer over a page title (don't click). Look on the lower left of your screen, and there's a gray box that appears when you hover over the title. It will have the URL, then some other characters after it. There will be a number that follows "post=" and that's your page ID. Simple once you know what to look for.

MemberPaul -- I hope I'm not violating protocol here, but I'm jumping in because I also would like to adjust the size of the GR slider on my Outreach theme. I visited the site you did, and you clearly figured out how to do it.
To adjust the GR slider width, do I simply need to go in and add the one line of code -- .home-featured {width: 500px;} -- in my CSS, as you have it in your illustration above?
If I do that, I assume there's now a blank space, with the default background color, to the right of the slider -- correct?
I don't necessarily have a need for something custom to the right of my slider, so do you know if I could make use of the Text widget and add it to the Home Featured slot? Would that automatically fall into place to the right of the slider? If so, would this let me post something like an announcement of the day, or a small blurb about my new book I've just released?
I would appreciate any thoughts/advice you might have, and if I need to move my question to a new post, I will do that.

MemberCertainly! I should have done that before -- my apologies for being lazy. 🙂 Here it is:

MemberThanks, John. Very helpful to have a first-hand account, and it sounds simple enough. My Photoshop skills are only one notch above nil, but I've got some competent help ready to walk me through it. I hope to give this a try within the next few days.

MemberJohn -- I'm very glad you posted this question, because this is something I'd like to do with on my Outreach theme as well (in addition to altering the header). I do have a "helper" who has offered to walk me through editing the functions.php, but like you, I would like to know how this would affect the theme.
I read through a question here on the forums posted by Paul in January (post #14788) regarding altering the size of the slider, and he did get a response to that, and by clicking on his link you can see that he was apparently successful. My "expert" referenced above has recommended an alternate slider and has provided me instructions on using shortcode to set it up as a widget.
Part Two of this question for me would be: If one were to either adjust the size of the Genesis Responsive Slider, or replace it with a smaller slider, will there be any additional issues with adding something else to the right of the slider via the Home Featured area?
I'll be following your discussion here, John.

MemberNo, I haven't made any changes to the header yet, so I would definitely be interested in anything you might have to offer! Thank you for checking with me.

MemberThank you so much, Greg. Your instructions were nice and clear, which is good for me, a coding idiot and coding-accident-waiting-to-happen. That worked, with no problems. However, I was expecting that change to cover the background in the header (comparing it to changes in my Streamline theme), but clearly the header is separate. I assume I can perform a similar step to change the background color on the header. Although I see from the forums that others have had issues with header changes, so I might just leave it alone for now. My color combos work okay together.
Thanks so much for the help.
