I did and I think the answer was "WordPress gremlins". I ended up redoing it. Not sure what ever caused it.
For anyone else's info, I finally learned that the reason I was seeing the sidebar is because (for whatever reason) it shows up when you're logged in. So logged in, I got that "primary sidebar widget" default that WordPress puts there. But once I logged out it was gone.
Never mind I think I finally got it! I think I was targeting the wrong element. Seems to be working perfectly now except in my broken Safari 🙂 Thanks so much!
So this is interesting... I just realized that it's only in Safari where it's happening and apparently it's me because I had someone else test in Safari and it doesn't happen for them. I cleared out my cache to no avail, but your function seems to have removed the sidebar completely. Sorry about that!
The remaining issue is the big white empty space where the sidebar was. I tried changing the CSS as per the tutorial and that works on desktop but then it doesn't on mobile (cuts off the right half of the page).
I realize that's a separate question but if you have any thoughts on that I would appreciate it!
Thanks for your quick response, however when I add that to the functions file it removes what's "in" the sidebar but not the sidebar itself. It is also removed from the admin widget area but on the website itself it shows the WP default:
PRIMARY SIDEBAR WIDGET AREA
This is the Primary Sidebar Widget Area. You can add content to this area by visiting your Widgets Panel and adding new widgets to this area.
I tried adding it to both the Genesis functions and to the child theme functions with the same effect. Thoughts?
Ok, I will give that a shot. Looks like a need a few minutes to make some code changes since I don't have the option to select logo or header, so I'm adding it to the to-do list 🙂

No, I have not been able for resolve it. The site is live at the moment but on the mobile size the header gets cut off instead of resizing. I thought there may be a plugin for this but the one I tried didn't work. Not sure off the top of my head what it was. Any thoughts?

Oh dear, how simple... I was overcomplicating that by a lot! Thanks for pointing out the solution, much appreciated.
I ended up sizing the slider and photos to 700x364 (which seems to fit nicely with content/sidebar). I also noticed though, that the slider seems to cache images in a way that makes it difficult to test so in the end I deleted every slider photo from WordPress completely, and then re-uploaded them with different file names. Then I cleared out my browser cache and that seemed to do the trick. So a combination of the slider size and getting rid of the cached images worked for me.
Yes, I tried the first one and it plunked in the default! But then I used the Simple Edits plugin to get rid of the rest. Thanks to both of you!
Never mind, I fixed it. It just looks like it was missing a chunk of CSS for the home featured left section.
Why would that be? It's using the same featured post widget with the same settings so I'm not sure why the sizing is different.
