1) the diagonal grey lines come from an 8x8 pixel png image file in the themes folder. you could create an image, same size with same name and replace exiting file. that way you don't have to worry about changing the css. if you have a different size, then you would need to update the css file. pretty easy to do.
2) yes
3) yes you can specify how many blog entries to show, the come with the predefined image size. the two middle posts there Create & Community come from a special widget. I don't use it with my site, so not 100% sure if you can display more than one. if not, you might have to do come coding

When I loaded the page, I noticed the site painting the picture frame border on the main image really slow. One idea might be to compress the image, use http://tinypng.org/ on image home-frame.png
I downloaded the image and tried it, the side reduced the image by 45% and with no quality loss.
For jpg's I use http://jpegmini.com/

Thanks. I guess you mean do something like this (link), just moving the featured-post-widget.php to my child theme folder? Then I would tweak the Title and Image structure.
On the [Read More], does it not work by default? Strange that I would have to add code.
I'm confused. Wouldn't he want to add/change #wrap to have max-width: 100% In doing so, I'm not sure what side image you would load into the header.

Like Gary mentioned, I'll be getting back into Genesis and a related theme to upgrade an old html site.
I understand the child theme concept. I noticed that a lot of the old studiopress themes got upgraded to new mobile responsive versions. With that in mind... My questions is, should I make a child theme of the child theme if I plan on making some changes. I was thinking of adding some additional code for a google maps implementation or maybe adding custom posts, so not talking about changes to the site via the theme widgets.
