Try using Notepad to make an empty file and call it php.ini. Upload this file into the wp-admin folder. I had the same issue and that solved it for me.
Other things to try if the above doesn't work:
Make sure the following code is included in your .htaccess file:

RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f

# END WordPressOR just delete the .htaccess file altogether (or rename it to .htaccessOLD)
Also make sure that your host has rewrite_module enabled
Good luck, I struggled with permalinks on several of my sites until I discovered the php.ini trick. I have no idea why or how it works, it just did for me. 🙂

This is an example of the look I'm going for (this is not my site; it's simply a visual on what I'm trying to accomplish):
As you can see, the body background is transparent so that the background image shows through; however the images on the site are not transparent. This is what I'm trying to achieve.

OK, thanks for trying. I'm not adverse to paying for help, but I got burned last month with paid help through this forum (I think it was actually a Copyblogger employee!) so now I'm reticent to go that route. I want to try it this way first; if I can't find a fix then I may come back to you. Do you have a way for me to IM you?

Unfortunately, that idea didn't work. I'm sure I probably did something wrong; I'm just learning CSS and a lot of it doesn't make sense to me.
I did experiment with it all week, trying different scenarios and locations with this code but couldn't make it work. I did succeed in making my home page disappear!! LOL
Anyway, I've started over and changed themes to see if that would make it work and that didn't either, so I'm asking for your help one more time. Thank you so much for your patience! Maybe someone else will see this post and will benefit from it as well.

Thank you SO much for your help so far!! This has all worked beautifully (I used the custom body class on each page to adjust to suit) and it all looks great.
I have one new issue, however: I discovered that when I insert an image onto any of these transparent pages, the image is transparent as well! That does cause a problem for me.
How to fix? I would like the background transparent -- as it is now -- but any images added to keep their original 100% opacity.

Awesome!! Thank you, that worked beautifully. I used .8 and that gave me the effect I was going for.
Do you know if it's possible to change the opacity on a per-page basis? i.e. have one level for the front page, and a more opaque effect on all the subpages? Or maybe have a different background pic on each subpage so that it's not quite as distracting as the front page?

OK thanks. The image mapping on the second tutorial shows how to do it on an html page, which I can already do... I need to do it in .php (more specifically, in WordPress/Studiopress).
I really appreciate you trying to help! I've been wrestling with this beast for the better part of a week (searching forums, trying to find an answer). So frustrating!! I'm sure it can be done but I'm surprised at how difficult it's proving to be to find instructions.

Thank you Susan... where in the functions.php file did you put the code? I tried it at the end and it broke my site... gave me a syntax error.
Also I was wanting to link only a portion of the image -- not the whole thing. I want a 'hotspot'... do you know how to do that?

BUT not for me, as I don't seem to have a header.php file with the theme I am using (Metric). Or if I do have that file, I can't find it.
With the absence of that file, does anyone know how I can modify these instructions to fit my theme and make it work?
