I figured it out. I actually had to add the text [& hellip;] (without the space between) to the end of my manual excerpt. Adding [...] did not work. It had to be [& hellip;]. Thanks for the helpful function.

Basically what I want is to create a summary of the post on the home page (using a manually crafted excerpt) and then link to the real post content with the "Read More" link. The Read More button doesn't seem to show if I use a manually crafted excerpt. Any ideas?
cjbojrabMemberOK. Found the problem. Needed to add flex-wrap: wrap; to the .home-featured css element.
Studiopress really should update their stylesheet for this section to flexbox (IMHO).
cjbojrabMemberOk. This works for the web browser, but not for the responsive mobile version. The featured content does not line up properly for the responsive mobile version. Any ideas?
cjbojrabMemberI solved the problem. The solution is to change the display of .home-featured to flex (flexbox) and add order attribute to css for .home-featured-1, .home-featured-2 and .home-featured-3
There are actually several different options for making equal height columns. There is a good article here: https://css-tricks.com/fluid-width-equal-height-columns/
In the end, I chose to go with flex because the browser support does not seem to be an issue in 2016.
