I am using the Education theme... and this theme does not use a widget to call up the posts in this section of the home page.
By "default" the posts display there and you can control the number you want to display on the home page in the
Settings/Reading .... I have it set to 3.

I am more of a designer than dev so I hope this is helpful.... do you still recommend that we add that code from your last reply?

I am not certain, but this might be helpful.... I find the Genesis Simple Edits plug in an huge time saver and very useful for customizing this items.
