Brad DaltonParticipantBrad DaltonParticipantYes its a great way to learn about hooks and conditional tags as a stepping stone to writing custom functions and more advanced PHP coding.
February 20, 2013 at 1:30 pm in reply to: Call Home Welcome Section on other pages besides home page #21752Brad DaltonParticipantYou could add a custom welcome text widget using this tutorial http://www.briangardner.com/welcome-text-widget/
And add a conditional tag to the function or use the Widget Logic plugin.
Another option is to modify the code included in the Agency child themes home.php file.
Brad DaltonParticipantThanks for the suggestions Anitac & Tony.
He's was using DirectoryPress, Wishlist and also wants a forum, membership site for paid directory listings and MU.
His site was loading in 28 seconds and i got it down to 3 by changing pretty much everything.
I installed s2 member as i have used it before a few times and deleted Wishlist, DirectoryPress and 20 something other plugins he did have installed.
So now i have to configure everything.
Not sure i like WPMU plugins. Read a post about them from a user that says the free plugins are better but i guess Pro Sites would be good to offer custom upgrades.
I do actually have a problem now which is causing the sites background to be messed up on certain pages like the Activate and Register pages.
Header image is also shortened after installing the plugins i mentioned earlier.
I'm using the Outreach theme and hope i can keep it.
I don't any experience with setting up BuddyPress or BBPress so i guess its going to be a big learning experience!
Not sure there's a better option.
Brad DaltonParticipantHi anitac
Yes. He wants to offer free sub sites with premium upgrades. Not sure how to set this up as far as the domain management side of things are concerned.Hi Tony
Sounds good!
Any ideas of which membership plugin works best with all these for allowing both free and premium memberships?
Brad DaltonParticipantFebruary 20, 2013 at 12:14 am in reply to: How to Exclude the Posts of a Specific Category from the Homepage? #21571Brad DaltonParticipantBrad DaltonParticipantUse the conditional tag for single pages and it will work as long as you remove the post formats code.
Brad DaltonParticipantAnything.
Why not a bouncing ball like this: http://wpsites.net/web-design/scrolling-text-images-html-effects/
Or something using HTML Marquee effects?
Or a big image of you and your books!
Brad DaltonParticipantBrad DaltonParticipant1. Height and width are easy to change but i don't think you can include text.
2. I think one of the most attractive features of GRS is that its responsive but it could do with a few more options and flexibility as you have to use it in a widget area
You can still use the tutorial if your slider includes a line of PHP or shortcode otherwise you'd need to add a widget area which is easy using genesis hooks and conditional tags.
There's some really nice sliders out there and Easing has Pro upgrade that may offer a few more options.
I read somewhere that 80% of people never scroll below the fold. Not sure if this is true.
Brad DaltonParticipantNo worries.
I think MS Webmatrix enables you to work locally and update back and forth but its not well supported for setup tutorials and a totally system than anything else i have tried to learn how to use for this purpose.
Personally, i use instantwp.com with the entire SP range of themes installed.
Brad DaltonParticipantTry this http://designsbynickthegeek.com/tutorials/add-widgeted-sidebar/
Includes code for creating a widget area before posts
Or you could use this which creates a widget area and extends full width
http://www.briangardner.com/welcome-text-widget/
You can also install the widget logic plugin to display your video on specific pages.
Brad DaltonParticipantEasing Slider is easy to install using the Genesis Simple Hooks plugin in any location and you can also use conditional tags to display on specific pages.
<?php if (is_home()) { easing_slider(); }; ?>
1. Install the Easing Slider plugin
2. Paste the code into any hook location using Genesis Simple Hooks
3. Change the conditional tag to display on specific pages.ref: http://wpsites.net/web-design/image-slider-wordpress-header/
Or you could also create a widget area anywhere using this tutorial and drag in a slider http://designsbynickthegeek.com/tutorials/add-widgeted-sidebar
February 19, 2013 at 1:42 am in reply to: Creating background color for a single widget in Eleven40 theme #21227Brad DaltonParticipantAnother way to style your widgets is to add a new class and i.d for a specific widget by installing this plugin http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/widget-css-classes/
New class and I.D = cat-widget
Sample CSS:
//This styles the widget background, adds a border and padding on all 4 sides .cat-widget { background: #2B2B2B; padding: 20px 20px 20px 20px; border: orange solid 2px; } //This styles the widget heading text and background with the same padding .cat-widget h4 { color: white; background: #2B2B2B; padding: 20px 20px 20px 20px; }
You could also install the Widget Logic plugin and paste in a conditional tag if you only wanted the widget to display on specific pages.
Brad DaltonParticipantYou can also use the advanced image settings by editing the image after its inserted.
Hover over the image until a small window displays and click the small icon.
You'll find advanced settings for a border, alignment and horizontal/vertical spacing.
Might need to see the page live to remove the line after inspecting with Firebug.
Can you post a link to your site please.
Brad DaltonParticipantIn your child themes functions.php, this line:
require_once( get_stylesheet_directory() . '/lib/style.php' );
Should be replaced with:
add_theme_support( 'genesis-style-selector', array( 'pretty-pink' => __( 'Pretty Pink', 'pretty' ), 'pretty-yellow' => __( 'Pretty Yellow', 'pretty' ) ) );

Brad DaltonParticipantOnce you populate any of the home page widgets, your posts will stop displaying on the homepage and you'll need to drag featured posts and page widgets into the home page widget area's.
However, you could put the search box in the top of the primary sidebar and continue to display blog posts on your home page.
Another option is create a page using the blog page template and select that as your front page using the Reading settings.
You could then create a widget area above your content and display the search box before your content using a genesis hook and conditional tag depending on which pages you want the search box to display.
The best tutorial to follow if you decide to create a new custom widget area is from Nick or Brian.
The above link provides several options as far as position of the widget area
http://www.briangardner.com/welcome-text-widget/
The above link provides a welcome text widget which you can also use for a search box.
You could also install the Widget Logic plugin which enables you to display the search box based on conditional tags.
Examples:
is_home - home page only
is_single - on single posts onlyPersonally, i prefer using Google Custom Search as i find it more accurate than the default WordPress search function.
Please let me know if you get stuck
February 18, 2013 at 10:47 pm in reply to: Changing Font Style and Size for Post and Page Titles #21200Brad DaltonParticipantI suggest you install the Firebug addon for Firefox and inspect the elemnet to find the classes which you need to target for this.
Then you can change the values for font-size and font-family in real time on your site by adding a new CSS rule before you make the changes permanent in your child themes style.css file.
.entry-title { font-family: 'Dancing Script',cursive; font-size: 26px; }
You'll need to find the CSS rules for the home page in your style.css file or by using Firebug.
You'll see them under the Headlines section of your style.css file
