Will "open in new tab" links work on all current mobile devices? Will a new tab open? Will a PDF display in new tab? Will a Word docx display in new tab?

FYI: I just discovered this while testing my sites in a few online simulators. And since I do not have Internet access on my ancient (2008) Samsung smart phone I can not test it. And I wouldn't trust it anyway sense it's so old.

Please give me some feedback based on your experience with your mobile device (please include make and model). Also, please provide your recommendation, if you have one, on using "open in new tab" links in today's mobile device world.

All replies will be very appreciated.

Yes, new browser windows or tabs will open and PDFs will be displayed. Not sure about Word docs.

I think you should base your links decision of opening a new window or using the existing on the content, not whether it's mobile or not. If you are linking to a page on the same site, then it's Ok, if you are linking to a page on another site, most of the time you want to open a new window so your site is still there in the background -- meaning they will continue on your site if desired.
