More and more customization is being moved to the WordPress Customize area. Some child themes have the "sticky nav" option yet many don't. WPEngine.com uses Sticky navigation in what appears to be a variation of the Breakthrough theme, so the company must believe it is a desirable feature. However, the Breakthrough theme I just downloaded and installed doesn't seem to have the sticky-nav option found on other themes. Some themes provide a header menu and a "standard" or "primary" nav menu and others don't have the option. I can fix the nav menu to the top of the page with a few lines of CSS, but it doesn't look right on mobile devices without writing some media queries. This should be built in.

Well, it's really their design preference. I have customized many themes with sticky navs to remove the sticky. Why? Because depending on the number of sub-menus items you have and the screen height of the device, people cannot scroll to get to the remaining items that may be on a sticky nav. Again, design preference and based on need and how content is structured. Every theme I use, there is something I need to add, change or modify something to fit the project.

My point is that the sticky menu should be an option in Customize; turn it on if you need it, don't turn it on if you don't need it. Sometimes my clients specify a top, fixed menu. It can be an issue on sites with 2nd level navigation. Good coding takes care of this.
