ParticipantI have been using Ipower for a long time. I've had issues in the past, some hacking, some odd things every so often.
However, I have a renewal coming up and I started looking at rankings for web hosting and holy crap...Ipower has really declined over the years. They get terrible reviews. So, I'm thinking of changing hosts and am hoping some of you can recommend a good host, especially for WordPress sites.I'm looking for good support...hopefully here in the U.S. Ipower has really declined here I've read and experienced a little bit.
When I look at different ranking sites, they vary a good deal...but there are some always in the top 5 to 10. Bluehost is one that I'm considering. But I'm hoping some of you can let me know what you use based on good service and fast, helpful support if needed.
Here are a few ranking sites I've looked at...and you can see they vary...but the "good" ones seem to be there up top.
Thanks!

ParticipantI personally began using HostGator (5+ years ago), and while they started great, they went downhill, much like what you're describing. I did some research before switching, and in the end, went with Digital Ocean (affiliate link).
Digital Ocean is a VPS (virtual private server), which was way over my head when I began, but the tutorials in their community (among other communities) were great, and I learned everything I needed pretty quickly. For $5 a month (I paid $10 with Host Gator), I now have a VPS on an SSD, and my site loads as fast as 0.5 seconds (without chaching), and I'm completely in control of what happens on my server (PHP version, caching solutions, stack type, etc). Again, I knew nothing about this going in, but learned it all within the last year, and I'm glad I did.
If you are looking for shared hosting, I've heard good things about WPSites, especially for WordPress sites. Bluehost might be alright, but I recall reading that they were in the same boat as DreamHost, HostGator, etc.

ParticipantThanks for the reply...good to know.
I'll try to dig up some more info on Bluehost...they come up high on rankings but it might take time to drop if things might not be as good now.
This is not easy...many people use different hosting services...hard to know what is really good.

MemberI left Hostgator earlier this year, after almost 2 years of declining service, and moved over to Site 5. Absolutely loving it so far.
From what I recall, Dreamhost had improved, but Bluehost hadn't.
I had tried Siteground last year with my most massive site (mainly because of so many recommendations from other WP pros), but they could never get my site working over there, no matter how many times I upgraded to a bigger and bigger hosting package. I finally punted, but not before wasting a few hundred bucks and a couple of months on them.
I also still have a bunch of sites on Media Temple (from long before GoDaddy bought them out). The hosting package I have you can't buy from them anymore (at least not with the same higher levels of resources), so ymmv.

ParticipantThanks for the input...I'll look at Site 5 too.
I see InMotion showing up high in a lot of the rankings too. I'll probably look at them and hopefully someone out there can comment on them...if they've had good or bad experiences with them.

ModeratorI use WPEngine.
December 7, 2015 at 6:46 pm #173108hobbit1326
ParticipantThanks Susan. WpEngine seems more expensive than what I'm looking for. I'm guessing it's a higher tier hosting?
This is tough...many different rankings have many different hosting companies! I'm just looking for a reliable service with US based support that is responsive. Funny thing, I have iPower right now...and have had very few problems over a number of years. However, one time my site was hacked about 3 years ago and the support people really had no solution. I had to figure it out myself which I thought was ridiculous. But hardly any downtime at all...very, very little. And yet, iPower does not appear in any top rankings at all. Maybe I'm lucky.
December 8, 2015 at 6:31 am #173192hobbit1326
ParticipantOk...It's a crap shoot. Maybe I just stay with iPower even though, like I said, they never show up in the "Top Web Hosting" reviews and sites.
Every time I look at reviews from the "top" web hosting companies, people say the same thing about all of them.
Horrible hosting...
Horrible support...
Problems doing this...doing that...
Wish I never moved to this host...
etc....I just looked at eHost.com because it shows up a lot at the top. Reviews had a ton of bashing.
Maybe it's simply that most people who are O.K. with any given host don't write reviews...whereas people who have problems are quit to bash.

ParticipantYou're likely not going to find a completely honest and unbiased "review" site. The issue is that there is massive money in web hosting, and much like politics, it's corrupted. People pay tens of thousands for false reviews, others are invested via referral links and game their entire site's reviews. The best way to get accurate information, is to ask like you have here, and analyze what actual people have used for years.
I'm not sure how they handle, but NameCheap now does hosting, and has solid support (at least the systems in place, not sure how they actually respond / handle), so consider giving them a try.
I personally left HostGator after 5 years when Endurance International Group bought them out - that's when performance dropped, and I generally saw a lot of hate towards them around the net (I used to praise them and hand out referrals all the time). Worth noting, is EIG bought out a TON of web companies, which can be seen here.

ParticipantThanks for the input...
Host Gator...Dreamhost....so much good and bad to read. So who knows. But I think you're right...I just keep reading and asking and I know I'll get a feel for a few...then pick one. And in the end, it still may not be the right one. That's why I wonder if I should just stay put.
Man, I just looked at that EIG list...they own a ton of them...even mine...iPowerWeb! Didn't know that. That maybe is why they're all the same!

I have been using godaddy for my hosting but notice huge wait times for support. My friend has been using wpengine and has been good, anyone else using them or has used them before?

MemberHi, I am from India, I have been using bigrock for domain registration and hosting my websites with hostsoch.in for a long time. I loved bigrock domain control panel and even never faced any issues with hostsoch as I get personal support from them. Earlier I used to host with hosting.india.to but their servers are too slow. I am looking for good support from web hosts.
Here is a list of few best indian web hosting providers:

MemberI use siteground (affiliate link).
They have wordpress hosting and all kind of good stuff like wpengine. Like free transfer, cdn, staging, cachers, pci compliance, backups, http2, ssl etc etc. It just works with good price 🙂
Europe servers also.

MemberDon't use an affiliate link on this forum. This is not a place to try to make money off of. Its a place for us StudioPress customers help each other.

MemberHey there,
Finding a good hosting company can be a challenge! There are many things to consider, (i.e. Cost, Features, Customer Support, etc.. )
Personally, I consider the features of the platform and customer support above all else. The platform should
- Be secure
- Be scalable
- Have reliable up time
- Have caching ( revers-proxy cache, object cache )
- Have the latest versions of software running, and are optimized for WordPress
- Have built-in backups
- Have built-in version control
Depending on your skill set you can accomplish all of this with a couple of droplets on digital ocean.
Here's a good few good guides to give you a few ideas
- Initial Server Setup with Ubuntu 16.04
- An Introduction to Securing your Linux VPS
- How To Secure Nginx on Ubuntu
- How Fail2Ban Works to Protect Services on a Linux Server
- How To Secure Nginx with Let's Encrypt
- A "simple" Varnish ang NGinx configuration for a WordPress blog
This isn't an exhaustive list, you still would want to consider, installing tripwire, securing php, ddos mitigation ( cloudflare! ), and load balancing.
If you're not comfortable with sever administration and want a developer friendly/feature rich solution, I highly recommend Pantheon.
It's a container-based platform that was built on a distributed, horizontally scalable infrastructure with no single points of failure.
Every site you create includes a Dev, Test, and Live environment connected by version control. Each has its own database, file system connection, and URL.Their CLI tool includes everything and everything you can do in the developer dashboard.
Hope this helps!
