I know this is a very basic. I read a bit about breadcrumbs online, and some articles say that overusing breadcrumbs can have a negative impact on SEO.

Both Genesis and MyStudioPress child themes have six options:

    1. Home page
    2. Single posts
    3. Pages
    4. Archives
    5. 404 pages
    6. Attachments

    First Question:

On which of these should I enable breadcrumbs to maximize SEO benefit (and user experience)?

    Second Question:

If I apply the breadcrumb settings in Genesis, will they also apply to whatever child theme I use for that site, or do I need to put the breadcrumb settings in the child theme?

    Thanks for your help!

    Best regards,

    John Soares

Go to the Genesis settings, select which pages you wan to show breadcrumbs on, and then it applies to your site. If you switch themes, and it's another Genesis child theme, your settings will be used for that theme too -- if that new theme has defaults that activate on changing of theme and the defaults include breadcrumb settings, then you will need to go back in and re-set them.

If your site is many levels deep, like a store or library of information with multiple levels of categories, then a breadcrumb makes it easier to get back up to the top category and to see where you are.

I just use common sense with breadcrumbs and don't think about SEO since, if you have relevant content, your breadcrumb is insignificant, and if you do not have relevant content, it won't help either.

A client last year got to position 2 in Google in a crowded market for pet sitting on his own with some crappy page builder with GoDaddy. He wrote a lot of content and made the most important words the biggest text on the page in a span tag. He naturally did this since the most important is the biggest. And he also did a lot of research as to what terms and the variations of those terms people searched for. There's many books on SEO and just following Google's instructions helps a lot.
