Is it better to upload a new theme via FTP client or directly from WP? Or does it matter? I need to learn more about using an FTP client, but in times past I haven't been successful with Cyberduck (as I'm using a Mac).
What are your thoughts?
Going through the Install via WP is normally the way to go. But if you are using non-Genesis themes, sometimes you can get a theme that is so huge in coding that it will time out and you'll need to just FTP and load the theme that way. There are times also when plugins need to be done that way. I use Filezilla and I know they have a MAC version. Also, it comes in real handy if you ever get that "white screen with the black line".... you'll need to use FTP to get a new copy of the file over. I use my FTP quite often.

I do most everything via FTP, but that's just personal preference. However, you'll want to have an FTP solution ready and working in case something goes wrong and breaks your WP install and you need to repair it manually (timed out theme upgrade, misplaced semicolon in a file, etc).

I'm prepared to do some tweaking with the color scheme, so here's my question. Should I touch the code in the file via FTP? Or do I make a copy first? If I need to make a copy first, how should I do that with Filezilla?
If you're working on the remote site, and you don't mind a little brokenness as you go along, then you can set up Filezilla to open .css and .php files in your chosen local editor. Then, you can right-click / alt-click on styles.css and choose View/Edit - that will open a copy of it locally. Do your edits, hit save in the editor, then switch focus to Filezilla. It will automatically pop-up a confirmation box asking if you want to send back to the remote site - select yes, then you can refresh in the browser and check if your changes worked.
Obviously, there are better ways of working in the long-term (local install, LiveReloadetc.), but for quick and simple edits, then it's really handy. I use it for theme and plugin file edits.
