Hello, I want to use just the Genesis theme without a child theme but there is no place in the widgets area to put a Responsive slider widget for the home page. I can only see widget areas for: header right, sidebars and footer.

(I want to use only Genesis because it is much lighter looking and less fussy/clonky than the child themes, and has the simple setup that I want ...except for the lack of widget areas

How can I get round this please? Many thanks in advance!

EDIT: I have found some code that should make a widget at the start of the content area but nothing shows in widget area after doing this.

Never do that! If you update Genesis all your customization will be lost. Always use a child theme. If you don't want the bells and whistles, use the Sample Child Theme which is the same as the Genesis Framework.

The sample theme does not come with a widgetized home page. You will have to make one and then declare your widgets in the functions file.

Ah thank you, Emasai, for that small but very important tip! Much appreciated 🙂
I think I will use another child theme and just change some css
