One frustration that I'm having, and others are as well, with using the forum is how the post editor mangles so much of the code we're trying to post when helping other users.

CSS seems to render okay as long as it's single-spaced, but HTML and PHP are getting beat up pretty bad.

I finally created a Gist to share some code for a thread that I answered last night, and that got me to thinking what if we could embed Gists here? WordPress.com has had this capability for a while now, but for some reason they haven't shared it with WordPress.org yet.

I've been using a plugin on my own site that lets me embed Gists in my posts, but just this morning I ran across this blog post by Robert O'Rourke that provides a code snippet that automatically embeds Gists without a plugin. Sounds to me like a great idea that would be, I'm pretty sure, simple to implement here on the new forums since they're powered by WordPress.

For the record, I tried it on a development site that I'm currently working on and it worked beautifully.

Here's hoping we can get something like this going here on the forums to take community support to the next level.

Per this thread, and Nick's response:

Right now I’m recommending using pastie or a similar service

    http://pastie.org

We are looking to use a great plugin that works for regular posts but it needs a bit more work.

FWIW - the Crayon Syntax plugin is reportedly compatible with bbPress.  Perhaps the Admins could try that, rather than using Pastie or waiting for another plugin to be updated?

I like the idea of embedding a gist. I"m not sure about using other plugins for syntax highlighting though, that might affect the ability to switch.

Nick, switch to what?  Are you say this forum now has a plugin (or equivalent) for code and syntax post content capability?  Or are you referring to switching to some other plugin, some day, when another is ready?

I am referring to switching plugins down the road. We can look into Crayon Syntax but ultimately what we go with should be maintained on going. I personally prefer Viper's plugin because I've seen how he is willing to keep maintaining. I'm not saying the Crayon Syntax developers aren't at the same dedication, I just haven't seen it first hand so my first instinct is to use Viper's plugin.

Just to put an update on this, I have tested the proposed fix for Viper's Syntax Highlighter Evolved plugin and we are prepared to push this. We just want to wait till after Christmas so if something blows up it won't be a nightmare trying to get folks in on the Christmas weekend. Thanks for your patience.

FYI, I still like the idea of being able to embed gists. There are many people who would find that more useful but I'll need to do some additional testing to see if that can happen along with the highlighter markup.

Thank you, Nick! Very good to have the Syntax Highlighter Evolved plugin installed in the forum!  Would you possibly enable the plugin's options like line numbers, tool bar and tab manager?

It would be really great too if there is any chance you could install/enable a SyntaxHighlighter TinyMCE button for the post editor? It seems annoying to make people refer to the FAQ for posting code how-to info when it is possible for the Syntax Highlighter Evolved to have that in the editor making it easy and eliminating the need to go to the FAQ to review what is needed for each of the codes.
