    I wanted the picture to cover the full width of the 960px, no white spaces on the side. My problem is that the padding of the content and the sidebar also includes the padding of the slider. I don't want the slider to have any padding but I want to retain the padding for the content and sidebars.

    You'll need to adjust the padding in the slider settings otherwise install a new slider plugin like Easing Slider.
