    Normally in the sidebar, I add the WP recent posts widget.
    The output is a simple HTML list.

    I was wondering if it is okay to use the Genesis featured Posts Widget.
    Output: (<article><header><h2>RECENT POST</h2></header></article>)

    Or was not meant for this purpose?

    Absolutely you can use the Featured Post widget in your sidebar. You can also use the Genesis Featured Page.
