When I'm looking at these different child themes and I see a piece of one (like the way it shows blog posts on the front page) and I want to include it in another child theme.

That is possible right? In my head I would just need to find the appropriate code in one and put it in the other and then debug...but I realize it is probably a bit more complicated, but basically how it works?

You are on the right track. It's just a matter of adding code from one theme to another, making sure that it's not going to clash with something in the other theme, and then adjusting the styling etc.

    Yes.

Basically, you will need to register widget area In your functions.php child theme), and then place them on the home page. Then you would put your content into those widgets.

Alternatively, depending on what you want, you can use hooks to add content, too.

    Hope this helps.
