problems since moving to a new host

I developed a wordpress site on another server and recently moved it to my new account at godaddy.com. Everything was working fine, plugins were all compatible with my child theme prior to the move but since the move I have had issues mainly with the Nextgen Gallery plugin. I think mostly the path. I have tried numerous things as well as uninstalling the plugin and reinstalling and reverting to an older version etc. 1 issue I have now is that I cannot upload new images to galleries through it and most recently I am not able to edit my navigation menu. It seems I can add the items and save but they always go away again and revert back. The whole menu even seems to go away until I go back into the manage menus area and place it back to the primary position. Is there anything you can do to help me.

First make sure you are still using the previous working version of Nextgen Gallery, which I think was 1.9.13 or something like that. Next, make sure the permissions on all your folders and files are correct.

After that, look for another gallery plugin 🙂 I had to finally get rid of NGG this year on three sites, with what poorly thought out updates they've been doing with version 2.

And FWIW, I've had nothing but bad experiences with WordPress websites hosted on GoDaddy, and with clients I've consulted I have always recommend against using them for website hosting. THe fact they just bought Media Temple concerns me a little bit, but so far everyone's saying that GoDaddy and Media Temple server infrastructures and operations will stay separate. I sure hope that stays the case...

Thank you for the reply Summer. It's so frustrating when things should be so easy. I designed custom sites for quite a few years and started with wordpress just recently because I thought it would be so much easier and less stressful.. NOT.
So, I had reverted the Nextgen back to 2.0.7 this morning but it did nothing in the end so I ended up updating it again right away after. Do you think I should try the 1.9.13 you suggested?
Also, what should the permissions on which folders be?

WordPress is easier, but unfortunately you chose one of the most problematic gallery plugins of the past 3 years to start off with 🙂

Look at the permissions on the gallery folder and album subfolders, see if they behave better with 777, rwx for all folders

For some more background on the Nextgen fiasco, read the support threads at wordpress.org. Epic Fail doesn't even come close to describing the problems they've had since releasing version 2.0... they even admit they didn't test as fully as maybe they should have.

You can download the older version and try it, but if you started with version 2.0, downgrading that far back may be problematic. IIRC, they changed a number of things, and some people had problems downgrading while others were fine.

Thankyou Summer. I've just been on the phone with godaddy and decided to restore all back to 2 days ago, I hope this wasn't the wrong choice and if it restores ok I'm sure the original issues will still be there.
I initially tried a few different gallery plugins. This is a photography site and he will have hundreds of images to upload and keep organized, this was my main issue and still is. If I have to redo the gallery pages in the end can you recommend a different gallery plugin that will do the trick?
1. I need come kind of organization for the galleries
2. I want a plugin that the photographer doesn't need to edit/resize all the images manually. Just upload and they'll display evenly.

For your issue I will suggest you one very good plugin with which you can manage your gallery in an organized way.

This plugin has lots of options and I have used it for one of my client's site who wanted facebook like gallery. So you can have it as an option.

I think this answers both of your questions.

Unluckily Nexgen is famous but most weird gallery plugin I have ever seen.

Oh, thankyou so much for your recommendation. I will look at it for sure. Another thing I want the gallery to do is display my thumbnails as a mixture of portrait and landscape and not cropped versions of his portrait ones if you know what I mean. I was able to do that with Nextgen. do you know if that would be possible with socialgalleryplugin?

Yes I understand, you are trying to get a google plus like image display.

I have not explored this plugin much as I integrated the normal social comment display.

A lot of people have been starting to use the built-in gallery features in the WP Media features, but you have to make sure you have all the image sizes you need defined before you start uploading, and make sure your portfolio templates are referencing the sizes you want where you want them.

There are a few plugins out there that enhance the features of the built-in gallery, but I haven't played with any of them personally yet... too many projects, not enough play time 🙂

A new one I just found out about is Easy Image Gallery, and it looks like it has some easy to manage features.

Hi, so whats happening now... I've found out the menu issue I have been having is due to exceeding the menu item limit which in this case is 90. I followed some suggestions to create a php.ini file containing php_value max_input_vars 7000 or max_input_vars = 2000 and upload it to the root but it did nothing for my problem.

Any suggestions here?

The gallery issue..., well, I restored the site back a few days and then deleted nextgen then reinstalled the earlier version 1.9.13 and managed to get it working again (except for the lightbox??) I'm afraid to carry on with it however because well because it is so old now, what eventually happens? Will I ever be able to upgrade it and if not, will it stop working?

For your php.ini issue make sure you've named it properly and located it at the site's root. It may need to be named php5.ini instead of php.ini http://support.godaddy.com/help/article/5647/why-isnt-my-phpini-file-taking-effect

Just be careful with using / tweaking php.ini files though.

If you'd like to revert to the built in facilities this plugin makes setting your custom image sizes up a snap and the photographer will only have to upload then and select the size(s) from the add media drop down.

I've been trying out a number of different plugins to find suitable replacements for Nextgen Gallery, and the funny thing is that now, one solution won't fit all the sites I need to replace NGG on.

Several sites I've just converted to using just the built-in WP gallery, and am trying out different lightbox/display plugins on top of those. The Easy Image Gallery plugin I mentioned above turned out to not work at all on a site with Executive Pro, so I punted that one pretty fast. RPS Image Gallery is working nicely there and on another site, so we'll see.

As for a replacement option for NGG and it's management features, I'll be playing with a new plugin called Gmedia Gallery this weekend to see if that might serve to replace NGG on 2 sites I have where the WP gallery won't suffice.
