Problem with gettext filter and genesis_get_option()

Hello, I am getting the white screen of death whenever I have something like:

add_filter( 'gettext', 'odt_replace_text' );

function odt_replace_text( $text ) {
	$odt_testing = genesis_get_option( 'test_setting', 'odt-settings' ); 

        /* some more code */

	return $text;	
}

It seems that the genesis_get_option is causing the issue but I cannot figure out why. If I were to use get_option there are no issues. Does anyone have any ideas why the filter gettext and genesis_get_option() don't seem to like each other?
