I'm looking to add a paid forum to my website. It appears Buddypress is the standard, but is this something that Premise does now, too? And if it does, would it be better to use it because its built by the same company as our themes?
Buddypress is more of social networking platform that you can incorporate a forum such as bbPress into. Premise is a tool to use to develop membership sites. Their suggestion is using vBulletin which is a fee-based forum platform. The old SP forum is vBulletin while this forum is bbPress. So Premise is only providing a bridge between the payment portion and the forum itself. That's if you want a Paid membership forum. You don't have to use them - but because SP had been using vBulletin for so long - I guess they saw a niche in developing something for everyone to be able to use - Premise.
I don't think you would want to use Buddypress for this at all.

So, Anita, I'm confused. You don't suggest Buddypress for adding a paid forum, but say that if I buy Premise I have to also purchase vBulletin, or I don't.
I have my existing domain, built with Genesis. I want to add a forum to it that I charge people a monthly fee. You suggest Premise because it has the payment portion built in? Do I have that correct? And if I get Premise do I have to create an entirely new website or is it an add-on?
No, I don't suggest Buddypress with paid forum. The reason being is that you would need to make it a paid site. Buddypress is Social Networking platform that you can integrate the bbForum. Do you want to set up a Social Network like Facebook, Google+ etc. with a forum? Or just a Paid Forum where they have a User ID and Password - and they just create a discussion and that's that. Buddypress allows the members to interact with each other, have streams, etc., just like Facebook. Is that what you want?
Here are the details on Premise with vBulletin. You pay for both. You pay for Premise and you pay for vBulletin. The premise has a bridge product that helps you to turn you vBulletin into a PAID forum. Out the box, vBulletin doesn't have that payment gateway to turn it into a paid forum. http://getpremise.com/access/#private_forums.

We don't have any experience with the forum plugins, but we do use Premise, in case we can answer questions on that.
We also use Paid Memberships Pro (again, not with forums though) - this is an open-source plugin that is also compatible with both BuddyPress and bbPress and may work well for you. http://wordpress.org/support/topic/plugin-paid-memberships-pro-buddy-press?replies=2
Maybe that is where I am confused. I want to have a place where multiple topics are going on, and people can interact with each other. I don't know that I care if it is like Facebook or not. Each user would have their own ID and pass.
Maybe I should be looking at s2Member or Wishlist to get the forum I want.
