    I am using the balance theme and trying to show the number of comments.

    I added it to the functions.php file under post-info and also tried adding  [post_comments] to the simple edits post-info section.

    Nick helped me figure it out just in case someone else has this problem.
    Had to remove this from style.css file .post-comments {

    position: absolute;

    top: -27px;

    right: 0px;

    }
